Another successful weekend at a new track for us! Spotty weather made for an interesting learning curve throughout the weekend. Our “best guess” alignment ended up being almost spot on and we were able to get P2 in the morning’s qualifying. The weather quickly changed though and a steady rain meant a switch to rains for the afternoon. With the BMW in P1 deciding to sit out the rain, I started on pole and had some great battles with the #26 BMW until he decided to take an off-road adventure in Turn 1 a few laps before the finish. Luckily, I’ve always been pretty quick in the rain (as long as I can keep it out of the wall!)
Saturday’s weather turned out to be much better and we had sunny skies for the last two races. Although I couldn’t quite catch up to P1, I had some great battles with an out of class FP Miata. Though he didn’t have the power, being lightweight with a lot of tire gave him a big advantage in the corners. Unfortunately, a little misunderstanding in the left-hander – I was someplace he wasn’t expecting me to be – caused him to spin off leaving me open to chase down the leader. Being in traffic with slower cars though ended up turning the track into an obstacle course – I think I lapped some cars 2 or 3 times! – and a few poorly placed cars caused me to lose the momentum I’d gained.
Still we finished with two second place finishes on Saturday, and set the fastest lap each race with a personal best of 1:00.4, which we were happy with for our first time to Lime Rock.
